GESTALT THERAPY

Gestalt therapy is a direction within humanistic psychology. It is based on Gestalt psychological theories and ideas from existential - phenomenological philosophy. Gestalt therapy was founded in the 1950s/60s in the USA by the German-born couple Laura and Fritz Perls, together with the American Paul Goodman.

THE FIELD IS EXCITING! Roughly simplified, I can say: In Gestalt therapy theory, we believe that healing can happen in relationship with the therapist. Both therapist and client influence and are influenced by each other. This can create new experiences in the field.

Then it becomes extra important for me, that I as a therapist work with my own unfinished gestalts/ traumas so that I can contribute to precisely new experiences. Then there will perhaps be less creative adaptation here and now.

 

"UNFINISHED BUSINESS"/ UNFINISHED GESTALS/ UNFINISHED EVENTS/SITUATIONS/ TRAUMA

Zinker writes that if we do not organize and process the "unfinished events/situations, the unfinished gestalts" from childhood, they will disturb us for the rest of our lives. He believed that Laura and Fritz Perls had created a direction in psychology "to complete unfinished business - to make them whole inside of us - so we can move on with our life."
